Sign a Petition to Save Ruby's

?
Ruby's Bar & Grill may have gotten the shiv from the barbarians at Zamperla, but it's not going down without a fight. Per Amusing the Zillion, the bar, which has sat on the Coney Island boardwalk since 1934, is holding a party-cum-rally this Saturday, beginning at 12:30 p.m. and lasting at least until 6 p.m.

In the meantime, a petition to renew Ruby's lease has started circulating, and the bar is using its Facebook page to urge its supporters to contact Zamperla and local politicians. For his part, Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz told Grub Street that the future Coney Island "should be a mix of 'old school' and hip," meaning he wants both "classic" businesses and more "artisanal" stuff.

Reportedly, Ruby's is being closed to make way for some sort of sports bar that will doubtless to conform to Zamperla's achingly bland vision for the waterfront.

The only closure mentioned on the Ruby's Web site is the bar's seasonal closure, which happened yesterday. And the accompanying announcement that the bar will re-open on Jan. 11 for the annual Polar Bear Swim suggests that its owners didn't see this coming: "Thanks for a great season friends and we will see you soon......."
